MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man is dead and two Shelby County sheriffs deputies are injured Wednesday after a shooting in South Memphis, authorities say.

Shelby County sheriffs spokesman Anothony Buckner said deputies were serving a fugitive arrest warrant at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when they were confronted by a suspect and gunfire was exchanged.

One deputy was shot five or six times, with at least one of those gunshots striking the deputys leg, and several others striking the deputys vest, Buckner said. The other deputy is believed to have been injured by a dog bite.

Buckner asked that the public pray for the recovery of the injured deputies.

He said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was taking over the investigation, which he stressed remained in the very early stages.

One deputy was transported to Regional One Medical Center in critical condition. A second deputy was injured and transported to the hospital in non-critical condition.

Memphis fire officials confirmed crews responded to an "officer-down" and a "civilian-down" call in the South Memphis neighborhood.

Memphis police and Shelby County Sheriffs deputies have also gathered in front of Regional One Medical Center, where Chief Deputy Scott Wright addressed media.

Wright described the multi-agency gathering as a show of support for the Sheriffs Office.

"When one of ours is hurt, all of ours are hurt," said Wright, who added that the wounded deputy was "lucky to be alive."
