Trump accuses Obama of having ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower

2017.03.04 04:16

President Trump lashed out at his predecessor early Saturday, claiming Obama had a wire tap on Trump Tower just before the election.

“Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” Trump tweeted amid a series of apparently angry messages.

Trump provided no evidence for his claim, which comes amid growing controversy over his administration’s possible Russian ties.

The tweetstorm began just before sunrise as Trump defended his US Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, who has been accused of lying under oath during his Senate confirmation hearings about his contacts with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

“The first meeting Jeff Sessions had with the Russian Amb [sic] was set up by the Obama Administration under education program for 100 Ambs……” Trump tweeted at 6:26 am.

Kislyak visited the Obama White House “22 times, and 4 times last year alone,” Trump later added.

But he quickly shifted to the wire tapping accusations, a claim recently espoused by conservative radio host Mark Levin, according to the controversial web site Breitbart.

“Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” the president tweeted at 6:35 am. “Is it legal for a sitting President to be ‘wire tapping’ a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!” he continued.

“I’d bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!” Trump wrote at 6:52 am, before adding: “How low has President Obama gone to tapp [sic] my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!”

The President attacked US Sen. Chuck Schumer Friday, posting a 2003 picture of the New York Democrat meeting with Vladimir Putin and calling for an investigation while calling Schumer “a total hypocrite!”

Schumer quickly retweeted the message Friday, adding the message, “Happily talk re: my contact w Mr. Putin & his associates, took place in ‘03 in full view of press & public under oath. Would you &your team?”

Sessions, who has denied wrongdoing, announced Thursday he would recuse himself from any investigation into ties between Trump’s camp and Russia, which has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential race.
